The Amalfi coast a UNESCO world heritage site in the Campania region is a stunning stretch of coastline along the Sorrentine peninsula south of Naples and Sorrento. Hillside towns are built precariously along the steep mountainsides that cascade down to the sea. The coast covers 55 kilometers of majestic terrain sky high costal cliffs display vibrant vegetation and multi-colored towns attract visitors from all over the world for centuries. Rioters artists and emperors have found inspiration and respite in this stunning region. A vertical landscape characterized by a picturesque labyrinth of stairways and narrow alleys connecting the two main elements of this landscape, the mountains and the sea. A continuous succession of headlands and inlets bays and fjords with pebbled beaches and rocks on which you can still see the ancient vice regal towers. The shift from the sea to mountain is seamless the mountainsides were terraced over the centuries shaped by human labor to create flaps of arable land. all the towns of the Amalfi coast are connected by the scenic 163 road built in the first half of the 19th century during the bourbon period and always considered one of the most beautiful roads in Europe. Following the natural course of the coastline the route is full of curves nestled between the rock and the sea cliffs giving new and spectacular shots at the exit of every tunnel. Before the construction of the coastal road locals reached all the towns via mule tracks and footpaths still existing and particularly appreciated by trekking lovers for the stunning views that can be enjoyed. There are 13 towns spreading across the Amalfi coast and we will take a closer look at each of them.
Amalfi the town that gives its name to the coast is situated at the mount of the Valle de Molini. It was the first of the four maritime republics of Italy and for a long time had the monopoly of trade with the east. It looks like a cluster of white houses clinging to the rock and connected to each other by covered alleys and stairways. At the center of the main square there is the beautiful cathedral of saint Andrew with its impressive staircase the bel positani tower in Arab Norman style and the charming cloister of paradise. The handmade paper museum and the ancient arsenals of the republic are also worth a visit.
Positano is one of the best-known places of the Amalfi coast for its picturesque staircases white washed houses following the natural course of the mountain and creating a vertical landscape appreciated by international artists. After the first world war Positano is famous for its handmade leather sandals and cotton clothes. The so-called motive Positano for its beautiful 19th century buildings in Mediterranean style and its postcard landscapes with the background of the tile dome of the main church and legally islands.
Ravelo was already praised by the Italian poet Pikachio in his de Cameron. It houses one of the oldest music festivals in Italy. The Ravello festival in addition to religious buildings many of which dating from the medieval period, ancient palaces and noble mansions co-exist with contemporary buildings such as the auditorium designed by the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The view that you can enjoy from villa Symbol in Belvedere is really stunning and definitely one of the most famous in the world.
Furore is also known as the town that doesn’t exist for its urban layout characterized by scattered villages surrounded by terraced vineyards. It is also called the painted village for the beautiful murals realized on the typical white-washed houses. Furore is the town of the fjord carved over the centuries by the river scatter. Every first Sunday of July Furore is hosting the high diving world championship.
Vietri Sul Mare is the first town of the Amalfi coast coming from Salerno and is worldwide famous for the production of bright colored artistic ceramic. Documented since the 15th century this town is famous for its noble buildings with richly decorated facades and the picturesque hilly villages of Redo and Albori where you can still enjoy an antique flavor atmosphere.
Scala is the oldest town of the Amalfi coast and birthplace of Gerardo Sasso founder of the knights of Malta. It is surrounded by dense forests of chestnut trees. It still preserves its quiet and relaxing atmosphere that perfectly harmonizes itself with the rich historical monuments revealing the wealth of the population during the middle ages mainly composed of noble merchants. The ruins of the Basilica of Santus statue the largest church in the duchy of Amalfi is situated in panoramic position overlooking the village of Pontone and still shows the beautiful inlay work on the exterior side of the apses, frescoes and precious marble.
Minori is an attractive and uncrowded seaside town at the center of a white cove on the Amalfi coast. It has a long tradition in the production of handmade pasta as well as in the processing of the famous Amalfi coast lemon. Surrounded by lush terraced gardens the small town hides architectural treasures of great value such as the ruins of the roman villa the basilica of Santa Trophamina and the bell tower of Ann Unciata in Arab Norman style.
Praiano is characterized by narrow streets making their way through the Mediterranean vegetation terraced gardens and typical houses leading directly to the sea. Here you can enjoy the most romantic sunset of the whole coast when the purple sun slowly disappears behind the mountains.
Miori is a coastal town built around the medieval fortress of Thoroplano. The wide promenade is bordered by the Norman tower on the east side, the marina and the charming Maramura castle on the west side. In the old town center beautiful neoclassical buildings co-exist with ancient vaulted houses.
Tremonti is a hilly town of the Amalfi coast surrounded by the green and lush vegetation of the Lotari mountains. It is the perfect place to enjoy the authentic local food. In particular dairy products bread and pizza prepared since the middle ages in ovens using rye millet and barley flour seasoned with lard and spices.
Conca di Marini a coastal village with a centuries-old maritime tradition is a natural balcony overlooking the sea surrounded by the Mediterranean vegetation and terraced gardens planted with lemon groves.
Cetara a fishing village gathered around the main church dedicated to Saint Peter is an active fishing port specializing in the processing and storage of tuna and anchovy creating culinary specialties.
Atrani a beautiful and charming town situated at the mount of the valley del dragon is a natural amphitheater on the sea offering the visitor picturesque views as well as the pleasure to spend relaxing moments in the main square away from the mass tourism and very close to the beach.
So, in 1997 UNESCO has included the Amalfi coast in its list of world heritage sites because it is an example of the Mediterranean landscape of great cultural and scenic value. Resulting from its topography and historical evolution the Amalfi coast is a major tourist destination and draws over 5 million visitors each year.
The best time to visit the Amalfi coast is between April and June. At this time of year, you will find warm weather and flowers in bloom. In July and august tourists flock to the Amalfi coast and temperatures start to rise as well. It is best to try to avoid these months if you don’t like the heat and high prices.
