From Historic Monastery to Luxury Villa
Palazzo Santa Croce was originally a small monastery that later became a bishopric in 1716. As a bishop’s residence at the height of the Baroque period, the building was renovated in the ornate style that remains today, and decorated with rare and precious woods and silks which were traded in Positano’s port with merchants from the Orient.
The villa’s lacquered doors, frescoed ceilings, and elaborate stucco flourishes were created by local masters. When maritime trade ended, Positano gradually became a poor fishing village…though Palazzo Santa Croce remained a luxurious palace overlooking the town.

Palazzo Santa Croce is located in “Li Parlati” a historic neighborhood on the upper part of Positano where a number of sumptuous villas were built around the same period. Because the large palaces stood out in contrast to the common village houses, locals called this street “a via re case longhe”, or “the road of long houses”. To reach the villa, you must climb 190 steps following a walking street that passes olive groves and gardens.

The Upper Floor
The two suites on the Upper Floor are decorated with carefully restored painted ceilings and frescoed walls. One is dedicated to Alfonso of Aragon and the 17th century decor centers around the ornate antique furniture and mirror, with paintings depicting seascapes. The other suite is dedicated to Queen Isabella, wife of Alfonso. Its private altar, starry ceiling and paintings featuring sacred scenes, lend the room a spiritual air.

The Attic Floor
The attic floor with two double rooms tucked under thick wooden eaves are decorated in a soft, understated style. The villa’s grand staircase, with its colorful stucco decorations, statues and vases tucked into niches, is a central element running through the villa. This floor opens onto the gardens behind the palazzo.

The view will take your breath away. From the picturesque window, you can see as far as Praiano and across the Mediterranean horizon. The bathroom is decorated in antique majolica tiles and an intimate terrace looks out on the sea and gardens.

COOKING CLASS IN THE VILLA
In the majestic historical kitchen of the Palazzo Santa Croce, all guests are invited to participate in a mini-cooking course featuring the preparation of traditional local dishes. Our chef will demonstrate how to prepare a dish that each guest may select from a number of recipes from the Amalfi Coast. For those who are passionate about cooking, more comprehensive cooking courses are also available, where guests can learn how to prepare a number of local specialties.
The kitchen is fully equipped, with lovely marble top counters, copper pots, and two ovens that include a wood-burning furnace for preparing bread and pizza.
